H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Visits and Commissions the 4KM Concrete Road Dubbed “China-Ghana Friendship Road” Constructed by Sunon Asogli Power at Kpone

On Tuesday, 25th February 2020, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, visited Sunon Asogli Power plant and commissioned a 4km concrete road which was constructed by Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Ltd in the Kpone Municipality.

The Road stretches from the Gao River to the Pentecost Junction and estimated to have cost USD4 million. The road was constructed as one of the company’s corporate social responsibility to the Kpone community. The road was named “China-Ghana Friendship Road” by the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Wang Shi Tang to strengthen the already developed friendship between Ghana and China. The road intends to provide great convenience for the people of Kpone.

The ceremony was graced by the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Shi Ting Wang, President of the National House of Chiefs, Togbe Afede XIV, Deputy Minister of Energy- Hon William Owuraku Addo, Deputy Minister of Roads and Highways- Hon Anthony Karbo, Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon Ishmael Ashitey, Municipal chief Executive, Hon Solomon Appiah and Paramount Chief of Kpone Traditional Area, Nii Tetteh Out II.

Speaking at the commissioning of the road, the Vice President commended Sunon Asogli Power for constructing a 4km concrete road in the community which is very durable as compared to an asphalt road and also happens to be the 2nd concrete road to be constructed in Ghana after the Tema Motorway which was the first and constructed 55 years ago.

He also pointed out that the gathering is not only to witness a commissioning of the road but also to witness a new milestone in the China-Ghana Friendship and the investment of China to Ghana’s economy.

He said Chinese companies in recent years were setting up companies in Ghana to provide employment opportunities to Ghanaians, in order to add value to the country’s natural resources in line with the President’s vision of building a “Ghana Beyond Aid”. He further encouraged the youth of the community to take advantage of this and other skills training and employment programmes introduced by the companies for their own self-development, as well as contribute their quota towards the development of our dear nation.

The Vice President expressed appreciation to Sunon Asogli for this kind gesture. He also lauded the company for their support to the community.

The Ambassador of China to Ghana, His Excellency Shi Ting Wang also commended Sunon Asogli power for being committed to their corporate social responsibility which includes not only constructing a road but sponsoring students to study in China, and supporting the people in the community. He stated that China and Ghana have jointly created several important projects in Ghana which continues to mark the deepening of the friendship between the 2 countries and the China-Ghana Friendship Road adds to the list. He also took the opportunity to speak on the case of the Wuhan Corona Virus and the current situation in China.

The Chairman of Sunon Asogli Power, Mr Yang Qun said constructing the road was in fulfillment of their corporate social responsibility and it was a way to show support to the community. Sunon Asogli continues to be a reliable and efficient independent Power company and continues to contribute its quota to the government saying “Last year, we paid a total of GHC14million in tax alone”.

He further stated that the electricity demand in the country keeps growing and for this reason Shenzhen Energy is looking at further investments in Ghana and Africa and are going to make Ghana the headquarters of Shenzhen Energy in Africa. He also showed his support and sympathy to China saying “I want us to keep China in our minds and hearts. China is facing a global health crisis and we hope the situation with the Coronavirus improves quickly. We stand in solidarity with Wuhan and China. We ask them to remain strong and be hopeful in these difficult times”.

The ceremony ended with the signing of a solidarity board for China by the Vice President and all present then the cutting of the ribbon and unveiling of the “CHINA-GHANA FRIENDSHIP ROAD” by the Vice President of Ghana, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He later took a tour of the plant.
