Optimizing Employee Mental and Emotional Wellbeing : Mental Health Awareness Month

Date: 23rd May 2025

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, a mental health talk was organized for staff on 23rd May, 2025, as part of the company’s commitment to promoting a healthy and supportive work environment. The talk was designed to equip staff with practical tools and insights to manage stress, build emotional resilience, and maintain mental wellness in a high-demand work environment.

The session was led by Hannah Adjei-Mensah from the Employee Assistance Program under the Occupational Health and Safety Department at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Her presentation, themed “Mental Health: Your Voice Matters – Optimizing Employee Mental and Emotional Well-being at the Workplace,” focused on how mental health directly impacts productivity, safety, and overall job satisfaction.

Mrs. Adjei-Mensah tackled common myths and misconceptions about mental health, especially in the workplace. She emphasized that mental health is just as important as physical health and that challenges like stress, burnout, fatigue, and depression are more common than many realize.

She also drew a clear connection between mental well-being and workplace safety, explaining that when employees are mentally unwell, they are more likely to be involved in accidents or errors.

One key message was the need for employers to actively implement systems and support structures that prioritize employee mental health. This includes creating safe spaces for open conversations, encouraging work-life balance, and providing access to professional support.

The interactive session included group discussions, scenario-based exercises, and Q&A. Feedback from the 40 participants indicated strong engagement and a keen interest in ongoing wellness initiatives.

The session was a timely reminder that fostering a mentally healthy workplace benefits everyone. When employees feel heard and supported, productivity improves, teamwork strengthens, and the organization as a whole thrives.
