As part of activities to mark Sunon Asogli Power’s Health and Safety Month, the company organised an emergency simulation exercise focused on responding to a chemical spillage. The exercise, held on-site, was designed to test the company’s emergency preparedness and the efficiency of its response protocols in a high-risk situation.

The scenario simulated hydrochloric acid within the chemical unit of the plant, prompting immediate action from the emergency response team.

The response team comprises the Central Control Room, the Chemical Unit, Administration, HSE, and the Fire Brigade of the company.

The shift charge of the chemical unit under the operations department initiated the emergency protocols to contain the spillage, secure the area, and ensure the safety of personnel, firstly by use of the washing station to wash off the chemical on the bodies of the workers. The Central Control Room was quickly informed in the process, and they then contacted the Fire Brigade, Security, and the Administration for an emergency vehicle.

The team demonstrated strong coordination, clear communication, and timely decision-making throughout the process.

The simulation also tested the company’s emergency communication channels on the radio handset to ensure interoperability among departments in evacuation procedures.

The exercise was closely monitored by the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) team, who later confirmed that all protocols were strictly followed and the objectives of the simulation were met.

The debrief of the simulation will be done at the various departments, while the final report on the strengths and lapses of all participating departments will be duly reported.

Speaking after the exercise, the chairman of Sunon Asogli Power emphasised the value of such drills. He mentioned that they allow us to identify potential gaps in our processes, build staff confidence in emergency response, and reinforce the importance of safety across the organisation.

Regular emergency drills play a critical role in preparing employees to act quickly and appropriately during real emergencies. They also help ensure that emergency equipment is functional and that response teams are always ready.

Through exercises like this, Sunon Asogli Power continues to demonstrate its commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and upholding best practices in occupational safety.
