At Sunon Asogli Power, health and safety are a way of life and not just policies. This was clearly demonstrated throughout the month of June, which was marked as Health and Safety Month. The month featured a full schedule of training sessions, practical drills, awareness campaigns, and competitions, all designed to boost preparedness and reinforce our safety culture across the company.
Fire Prevention and Equipment Checks
The month began with a thorough inspection and maintenance of fire extinguishers across the production and residential areas. Worn-out and rusted extinguishers, as well as fire boxes, were promptly replaced, ensuring all critical areas remain protected and up to standard. This preventive maintenance activity underpins our long-standing commitment to maintaining a fire-ready environment.
Fire Safety and Emergency Response Training
A key highlight of the month was a three-day fire safety training conducted by the Ghana National Fire Service. The training covered:
- Basic fire safety practices
- Good housekeeping
- Fire extinguisher use
- Emergency rescue procedures
Our in-house fire brigade also received targeted training in casualty handling and rapid extrication techniques, strengthening their ability to respond quickly and effectively in real emergencies.
The various departments across the plant were not left out. Staff participated in hands-on CPR training, equipping them with lifesaving techniques that could make a real difference during cardiac or respiratory emergencies.
Fire Safety Awareness Posters
To complement the training, fire safety posters were designed and displayed at high-traffic areas, including the main assembly point. These posters provided quick but essential tips on:
- Kitchen fire safety
- Electrical fire prevention
- Fire alarm response
- Proper lifting postures
These visual reminders helped reinforce the message of daily safety vigilance among staff and visitors.
Chemical Spillage Emergency Drill
One of the standout events of the month was a chemical spillage simulation, which involved a staged fire caused by a chemical spill and a burning tricycle. This full-scale emergency exercise tested the coordination between the fire brigade and all emergency response units on-site. The scenario allowed teams to practice containment, evacuation, firefighting, and casualty management under simulated real-world pressure.
Fire Safety Quiz
To test and reward fire safety knowledge, the HSE Department rolled out an online fire safety quiz with 150 questions. Staff, national service personnel, and contractors participated enthusiastically, with a total of 141 participants. Those who scored 120 and above were rewarded with prizes such as tablets, smartwatches, headsets, and bags of rice.
CPR Competition
The month wrapped up with a CPR competition that brought out the best in teamwork and emergency response skills. Sixteen teams composed of staff, contractors, and national service personnel went head-to-head in demonstrating CPR techniques. The top three teams were awarded special prizes, while all other participants received consolation gifts as recognition for their effort and commitment.
Building a Stronger Safety Culture
June’s Health and Safety Month was not just a routine exercise but a hands-on, practical campaign to empower every individual at Sunon Asogli Power to make safety at the workplace their priority. Whether it was learning how to use a fire extinguisher, administering CPR, or responding to a chemical emergency, each activity added another layer of confidence and capability to our workforce.
As a company that values the lives and well-being of its people, Sunon Asogli Power remains committed to continuous safety education and emergency preparedness to help build a safer, more resilient workplace.
