Delivering the welcome address, Chairman of Sunon Asogli Power, Mr. Kwame Wang, reflected on the company’s beginnings and the determination that led to the establishment of Ghana’s first independent thermal power plant. He recalled arriving in Ghana 18 years ago when the project site was undeveloped and highlighted how Phase I of the plant was delivered in record time during a period of severe power shortages and gas supply challenges. He noted that Phase I, followed by Phase II, provided critical stability to the national grid and marked a defining moment in Ghana’s power generation history.

Chairman Kwame Wang paid special tribute to Togbe Afede XIV for his instrumental role in introducing Shenzhen Energy to Ghana and facilitating the investment that led to the birth of Sunon Asogli Power. He also acknowledged Togbe Agbelom for his key role in securing the land on which the plant was constructed and for his continued support in ensuring security and strong community relations. The Chairman further emphasised the dedication of pioneering staff whose efforts under challenging conditions laid the foundation for the company’s long-term success.
The heads of the institutions present gave goodwill messages to commemorate Sunon Asogli’s 18 years in Ghana’s power sector. They each spoke fondly of how Sunon Asogli Power started and the steps they each took in ensuring Ghana’s first Independent Power Producer was successful.
Representing the former staff of Sunon Asogli Power, Mr. Obodai, currently Maintenance Manager at Early Power, delivered a reflective address highlighting the company’s legacy of capacity building. As one of the first local engineers employed to operate the thermal plant in 2010, he described Sunon Asogli Power as a training ground that shaped Ghanaian expertise in power generation. He noted that through deliberate knowledge transfer and mentorship, the company has produced engineers now managing and operating other Independent Power Producers, including Twin City Energy, Early Power, and Cenpower. He emphasized that Sunon Asogli Power’s contribution extends beyond electricity generation to the development of leadership, professionalism, and national technical capacity.
The keynote address was delivered by the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition. He commended Sunon Asogli Power for its 18 years of contribution to power generation and 15 years of reliable operation, describing the company as a critical anchor during periods of constrained supply, fuel challenges, and fiscal stress in the power sector. He highlighted ongoing reforms to restore financial discipline within the sector, including improvements in the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, and expressed appreciation for Sunon Asogli Power’s constructive engagement in the rationalization of IPP contractual terms.
The anniversary celebration concluded on a lively note with sports activities involving staff, reinforcing teamwork, camaraderie, and the spirit of unity that has defined Sunon Asogli Power’s journey over the past 18 years.
