In a decisive step toward strengthening collaboration between local government and industry, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA), Hon. Samuel T. K. Morton, led his team on an official familiarization tour of Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited Company. The visit formed part of a broader effort to align municipal development priorities with private sector expansion, reinforcing a shared commitment to infrastructure growth, environmental sustainability, and long-term economic progress within the municipality.

The delegation engaged the leadership of Sunon Asogli Power in constructive discussions centered on operational insights and future development plans. Since assuming office in May 2025, Hon. Morton has emphasized strategic partnerships as a vehicle for accelerating development across the municipality. The tour provided an opportunity for the Assembly to gain first-hand understanding of the company’s operations and its upcoming Phase III expansion project, which is expected to further strengthen power generation capacity.

A key issue discussed was the condition of the road infrastructure serving the industrial enclave. The Chairman of Sunon Asogli Power, Mr. Kwame Wang, highlighted the logistical challenges posed by sections of the existing road network, particularly with the transportation of heavy plant equipment required for the timely execution of the phase III project. Reliable infrastructure, the chairman noted, is essential to sustaining industrial growth and maintaining operational efficiency.

Chairman Wang also raised concerns about the overcapacity of the Kpone landfill, describing it as an urgent public health and environmental issue. As part of a long-term solution, Sunon Asogli Power proposed the development of a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant, drawing inspiration from international best practices such as the Shenzhen East Waste-to-Energy Plant in China. The proposed initiative would convert municipal solid waste into renewable energy, helping to ease pressure on the landfill while contributing to the municipality’s energy supply.

In response, Hon. Morton outlined ongoing and planned interventions aimed at improving the municipality’s road network. He stated that major reconstruction works are currently underway, with completion expected within the next 18 months. These upgrades are anticipated to significantly enhance access to industrial facilities and strengthen the area’s growing economic profile. Hon. Morton was optimistic about the prospect of turning the Kpone landfill site into a waste-to-energy plant. He welcomed the idea and added that it will be the best solution to the landfill issue while also providing jobs for his people.

The discussions underscored the importance of fostering open communication and collaboration between the municipality and the company. The visit concluded with a guided tour of the power plant, providing the delegation with deeper insight into its operations.
