A delegation comprising selected members of the Board of Directors and senior management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ghana’s largest electricity distribution utility, paid an official visit to the Sunon Asogli Power Plant on Monday, 16 March 2026.

The visit formed part of a broader industrial tour of ECG’s generation partners within the Tema enclave. It provided the Board with a valuable opportunity to gain deeper insight into the operations and assets of contracted Independent Power Producers (IPPs) while also strengthening existing technical and commercial relationships. The delegation included Dr. Simon Akorli, Nana Difie Agyakoma II, Hon. Adams Salam MP, Hon. Queenstar P. Sawyerr MP, Hon. Alhassan Sulemana, Ms. Sylvia Noshie, Mr. Frank Nortey, Mr. Apeagyei Apeakorang, and Mr. Augustine Adu-Amankwah.

Welcoming the delegation, the Chairman of Sunon Asogli Power, Mr. Wang Jinxiao, acknowledged the long-standing collaboration between ECG and Sunon Asogli Power, which dates back to the initial phase of the plant’s development. In his remarks, he emphasized the company’s commitment to operational excellence, asset integrity, and reliability, noting that these have significantly contributed to Ghana’s access to stable and consistent power supply.

Providing historical context, the chairman highlighted the engineering challenges posed by the site’s topography during the construction phase. Despite these constraints, the company successfully adapted the plant design to suit the environment. He further noted that Sunon Asogli has not only established itself as Ghana’s pioneering IPP but has also become one of the most efficient, cost-effective, reliable, and collaborative power producers in the country.

Sunon Asogli Power is also expanding its footprint into waste-to-energy projects and environmental sustainability initiatives. Building on the expertise and achievements of Shenzhen Energy Group, the company reaffirmed its readiness to finance the Phase III expansion project.

In outlining the project’s progress, Chairman Wang assured the ECG Board of expedited delivery timelines. He indicated that land for the project has been secured, a memorandum of understanding for natural gas supply is in place, pre-feasibility studies have been completed, and key permits, including the environmental permit, have already been obtained. Supporting this, Dr. Elikplim Apertorgbor, Business Development Manager at Sunon Asogli Power, highlighted the enhanced efficiency of the proposed Phase III 9F technology, citing significant fuel savings, reduced investment costs, and faster project execution.

Central to the engagement was a strong recognition of the enduring relationship between ECG and Sunon Asogli Power. Over the years, this partnership has been built on trust, resilience, and a shared commitment to supporting Ghana’s energy sector. It also reflects the broader cooperation between the Republic of Ghana and the People’s Republic of China, demonstrating the impact of international collaboration on national infrastructure development.

As part of the visit, the ECG delegation toured the site designated for the Phase III project. Dr. Simon Akorli, who led the delegation, expressed appreciation to Sunon Asogli Power for the opportunity, particularly for new board members to familiarize themselves with the plant’s operations. He noted that the visit would enhance ECG’s understanding of industry challenges and opportunities, ultimately supporting improved efficiency, profitability, and sustainability across the sector.
