In a move that significantly strengthens Ghana’s transition toward renewable energy, Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited Company successfully executed two major solar energy milestones on September 17, 2026. The company broke ground on a 50-megawatt (MW) photovoltaic (PV) installation at Zanzugu Yipala in the Savannah Region and formally executed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for an additional 150 MW PV facility development in a grand ceremony held at Kpone, Ghana.
The high-level gathering at Kpone brought together key political, corporate, and traditional stakeholders. Dignitaries included municipal leaders from Shenzhen City of China; Li Yingfeng, Chairman of Shenzhen Energy Group; Wang Jinxiao, Chairman of Sunon Asogli Power; Dr Simon Akorli, Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG); His Royal Highness Tapha Mahamadu III, Paramount Chief of the Dalun Traditional Area; and Hon. Samuel Morton, Municipal Chief Executive of the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly.
Key addresses of the day were delivered by the leaders from Shenzhen City, Li Yingfeng, Chairman of Shenzhen Energy Group, and Dr Simon Akorli, Board Member of the Electricity Company of Ghana, highly praising the company’s outstanding contributions to the Ghanaian energy market and ensuring a stable and reliable power supply over the years. They also extended their warm congratulations on the successful groundbreaking of Sunon Asogli Power’s 50 MW photovoltaic project.
The 50 MW photovoltaic project, which is located at Zanzugu Yipala, in the Savannah Region of Ghana, is the group’s first overseas photovoltaic project, marking a pioneering step in the company’s investment strategy in the renewable energy sector in Ghana. The project will effectively increase the proportion of clean energy in Ghana’s energy mix and optimise the power supply structure.
In the presence of relevant leaders from Shenzhen Municipality, Mr. Li Yingfeng, Chairman of Shenzhen Energy Group, and Dr. Simon Akoli, Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana, Mr. Wang Jinxiao, Chairman of Sunon Asogli Power Company Limited, and HRH Tapha Mahamadu III, Paramount Chief of the Dalun Traditional Area of Ghana, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Development and Construction of a 150 MW Photovoltaic Project. The signing of this agreement marks a comprehensive upgrade of Sunon Asogli Power’s new energy strategic layout in Ghana, demonstrating the company’s firm commitment to establishing itself locally, collaborating with traditional communities, and jointly pursuing green development.
Subsequently, leaders from Shenzhen city and Wang Jinxiao, Chairman of Sunon Asogli, jointly unveiled the Shenzhen Energy Asogli Integrated Solar-Storage-Charging Demonstration Station. The completion of this demonstration station is an important milestone for Shenzhen Energy Group in implementing the national strategy of developing new productive forces to promote the export of new energy vehicles, fulfilling Guangdong Province’s requirements for green energy opening-up, and adhering to Shenzhen’s “Supercharging City” construction concept. It also leverages Shenzhen Energy Group’s industry advantages as the leader of the Energy Storage Association to proactively serve the national “15th Five-Year Plan” development strategy. The project aims to connect the entire chain of photovoltaics, energy storage, and electric vehicle charging; explore new business models for electric vehicle exports under trade; and form a replicable and scalable one-stop solution.
Finally, the leaders inspected the plant’s production area and checked the safety production situation in the central control room. They emphasised that overseas projects must remain vigilant about safety production, strengthen safety management responsibilities at all levels, thoroughly investigate and rectify potential hazards, and build a solid defence line for the safe operation of the power plant.
By visiting staff on duty and engaging in cordial conversations with local Ghanaian employees, we encouraged everyone to remain dedicated to their roles and responsibilities, leverage the strengths of local talent, and actively integrate into the entire process of the project’s construction and operation. We urged them to continuously enhance their professional capabilities and work in close concert with the Chinese team by joining forces to ensure the company’s safe and stable operation.
The successful conclusion of this event highlights the comprehensive strength and sense of social responsibility of Sunon Asogli Power as the country’s first independent power producer. Moving forward, the company will continue to uphold the development philosophy of “green, innovation, and win-win cooperation”.
