The atmosphere at Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited Company buzzed with colour, music, and unmistakable warmth on Monday evening as the company hosted its annual Chinese Spring Festival Gala to mark the arrival of the Year of the Horse. What unfolded was a cultural celebration and a powerful testament to nearly two decades of shared purpose between Ghana and China.
Her Excellency, the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, graced the evening as special guest of honor, lending an extraordinary significance to the occasion. She was joined by a distinguished gathering that included Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of Asogli State; Togbe Agbelorm Agbotorkor II, Chief of Salo State; Mr. Edmond Moukala, UNESCO Country Director for Ghana; Hon. Morton, Municipal Chief Executive of Kpone-Katamanso; Ms. Liu Shilei, Vice President of Shenzhen Energy Group; and other senior officials from CADFAND, the China Medical Team, community leaders, and the media.

The gala’s formal programme featured a welcome address by Togbe Afede XIV, followed by speeches from the Chairman of Sunon Asogli Power Ghana Limited, Mr. Kwame Wang; Vice President of Shenzhen Energy Group, Ms. Liu Shilei; UNESCO Country Director, Mr. Edmond Moukala; and a special address by Her Excellency the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
Her Excellency praised Sunon Asogli Power’s contribution to Ghana’s energy sector while laying down a clear-eyed vision for what enduring partnerships must look like. Acknowledging nearly two decades of service, she highlighted how the company has supplied a significant share of the country’s electricity and helped stabilise the energy sector during some of its most critical periods. Sustainable development, she emphasised, “relies not only on infrastructure, but on people, culture, and mutual respect.” Reflecting on Ghana-China relations that stretch back to 1960 and have grown to encompass education, trade, and industry, the vice president was clear that any partnership worthy of the name must be grounded in clarity, accountability, and alignment with national priorities. Adding that as Ghana strengthens its industrial base, energy security, and economic resilience, the country remains open to partnerships that are transparent, fair, and mutually beneficial.

Togbe Afede XIV traced the company’s remarkable origin story and took the audience back to a pivotal trip to China in 2005. He noted that Sunon Asogli Power stands as Ghana’s largest and most efficient independent power producer, with the second phase alone contributing 360 megawatts to the national grid. He announced expansion plans that include exporting electricity to Burkina Faso and the exploration of energy projects in Cameroon.
Mr. Wang Jinxiao, Chairman of Sunon Asogli Power, reflected on the company’s growing role as a cornerstone of Ghana’s energy sector, highlighting its consistent contributions to the national grid and its commitment to reliable power supply. He acknowledged the Government of Ghana’s efforts in stabilizing the energy sector through policy reforms and called for deeper public-private collaboration. Looking ahead, the chairman outlined an ambitious growth agenda, including the ongoing 850 MW Phase III expansion, a 200 MW solar project in Northern Ghana, and the imminent launch of electric vehicle charging stations and EV imports. Closing with the spirit of the Year of the Horse, he urged all stakeholders to press forward with resilience, integrity, and a shared vision for Ghana’s sustainable energy future.

Ms. Liu Shilei, Vice President of Shenzhen Energy Group, delivered a message of appreciation and unity on behalf of the Group’s headquarters. Describing the occasion as a true family reunion, she noted that they had journeyed across continents to celebrate together in Ghana. She conveyed sincere gratitude to the Government of Ghana, the committed management team, and especially to the Ghanaian colleagues who have worked side by side with their Chinese counterparts through every challenge.
The evening’s program was a feast for the senses. Performers took the audience on a sweeping cultural journey, opening with the rhythmic thunder of a traditional Chinese waist drum performance that had the crowd leaning forward in their seats. That energy was matched by the mystique of a face-changing dance. In honour of the Year of the Horse, a spirited horse racing performance galloped onto the stage, full of pageantry and symbolism, which evokes speed, freedom, and the energy that defines the year ahead. The celebration then embraced its African home with a stunning display of African dance and acrobatics, drawing thunderous applause as performers pushed the boundaries of balance, agility, and grace.

From the vast, wind-swept imagery of the grasslands to the fiery passion of the sarilang dance, the performances swept guests across landscapes and cultures before the evening drew gently to a close with a moving rendition of “Wo Ai Ni Zhongguo”—”I Love You, China”—a beautiful song that, in this setting, felt as much a love letter to the bond between two nations as it did to a homeland far away.
As the evening drew to a close, all performers and managers sang a heartfelt “unforgettable night” with the sense that something more than a party had taken place. The 2026 Spring Festival Gala was a moment of celebration, laughter, and family.
