Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited Company, in partnership with the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), has completed a one-month Power System Operator Training Program aimed at equipping operators with advanced technical skills and enhancing coordination across the energy sector. The training was conducted in two groups, and each group completed a two-week session. This is the second time the two companies have collaborated to deliver such training.

The training, held in August 2025, brought together system operators for intensive modules designed to improve communication, operational discipline, and technical expertise in managing the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS). Senior leadership from both GRIDCo and Sunon Asogli Power attended the opening session, underscoring the importance of the initiative.

In the first week, participants focused on core competencies, including effective communication under pressure, system nomenclature, the Standard Protection Code, Ghana’s power system architecture, and operator vigilance. The second week shifted into high gear, plunging operators into the high-stakes technical arena of grid management, such as black start protocols, outage coordination, reactive power control, wholesale market operations, the National Grid Code, and operational safety.

The training program also included group exercises, scenario-based simulations, and a guided tour of GRIDCo’s System Control Centre and the Volta Station, giving participants practical exposure to real-time grid operations.

The training closed on 29th August 2025 with a ceremony attended by officials from GRIDCo and Sunon Asogli Power. Speaking on behalf of participants, Alfred Yamson shared his experience and noted that the program provided clear guidelines to follow in order to maintain efficiency in operations. Mr. Isaac Mumuni, Director of HR at GRIDCo, commended the participants and encouraged them to apply the knowledge gained. He expressed hope that more training modules would be introduced in partnership with Sunon Asogli Power.

Mr. Lin, Acting General Manager of Sunon Asogli Power, also highlighted the company’s long-standing relationship with its stakeholders, particularly GRIDCo and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). He emphasized that for over 18 years, Sunon Asogli Power has upheld these partnerships and looks forward to strengthening them further in the years ahead.

Sunon Asogli Power and GRIDCo emphasized that the program reflects their shared commitment to operational excellence and energy security, ensuring Ghana’s grid is prepared to meet both present and future challenges.
